Erie MetroParks Continues Its Mission to Conserve, Preserve, Protect & Enhance

Erie MetroParks will continue its commitment to the conservation and preservation of Erie County’s natural resources in 2019. Access to the district’s 12 public parks will also be improved and otherwise enhanced through a series of projects included in the annual capital improvement plan. Every resident of Erie County lives roughly 10 minutes or less from a MetroPark, and each property has its own unique characteristics that provide recreation and relaxation for individuals and families alike.
The following list provides a glimpse of the planned projects for 2019, along with totaled budgets for each property’s projects. Erie MetroParks has been awarded and is continuing to seek grant funds for the completion of several projects. All projects listed are expected to be completed within 2019.
Osborn MetroPark | $275,000 in capital improvements will include:
- Four additional pickleball courts to be added.
- New educational pathway for children and families featuring larger-than-life plant and wildlife themed play structures.
- New reservable picnic shelter to be constructed.
- Improvements to the Perimeter Path will continue into 2019.
Edison Woods MetroPark | $37,000 in capital improvements will include:
- Removal of an abandoned house along SR61 in Berlin Heights.
- An additional parking lot for use with horse-trailers will be added on Mason Rd. in Berlin Heights.
The Coupling MetroPark | $35,000 in capital improvements will include:
- New shed for canoe/kayak equipment storage to be built.
- Improvements will be made to the canoe/kayak launch along the Huron River.
- Continued Improvements to The Depot reservable facilities.
- Enhancement of an existing pond, including the addition of a dock.
Putnam Marsh | $40,000 in capital improvements will include:
- Investigation and remediation of invasive aquatic species.
DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve | $15,000 in capital improvements
will include:
- Additional fencing to be installed
A total of $402,000 has been allocated for the completion of these projects. Grant funds totaling $8,181 have been awarded to Erie MetroParks for the completion of the new Osborn MetroPark picnic shelter, while additional grant funds are being sought for projects at Osborn MetroPark and The Coupling MetroPark.
These improvements and enhancements come in addition to the over 500 free public programs and events that Erie MetroParks provides annually and ongoing management of all 25 properties that fall under the protection of conservation easements held by Erie MetroParks. Creating access and opportunities for experiences in nature is a vital park of Erie MetroParks’ mission to conserve and protect the natural resources of Erie County.
